BETH T

The Stork

By The Yukon Street Players

GraceAfter nine months of anticipation, it can be hard for any production to live up to audience expectations, especially when tackling such a well-worn topic as birth. But I'm thrilled to report that last week's delivery of The Stork was just what the doctor--or in this case, the midwife--ordered. In her debut role as Mother, Beth Threlfall wisely chose to play things low-key; rather than fall into ho-hum stereotypes (ranting, screaming, swearing at her husband), Threlfall instead chose to remain calm and focused during her four-hours on stage. And while keen supporting work by the Witches (Debbee Baker, Vanessa Green and Alison MacRae-Miller) kept things brewing nicely, it was the last-minute entrance of the Midwife (a well-cast Deanna Wildeman) that gave the final act the push it really needed. Yet as we all know, the key role of any Stork production is that of the baby, and newcomer Pandora Grace Blackbird simply shone in this, her Victoria debut. Throw in a simple living room set, some subdued lighting and a cool soundtrack by Salt Spring's Interchill, and all in all, you've got the production of a lifetime. Bravo!
